What is TEFL teaching?
By John R. of MacroFindDotCom
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a foreign Language. A TEFL teacher therefore teaches English to students for whom English is not their first or second language. Teaching in Thailand would fall in this category, since English is neither a first or second language for Thai students. TESOL on the other hand stands for Teaching English as a second language. The distinction between these two has become a little blurred over time, and many people use them as synonyms nowadays. A couple of years ago all you needed to get a TEFL job in many parts of the world was to be a native English speaker. In some parts of South America and the Far East this is still possible, but most schools now require at least a TEFL or TESOL certificate, and in many countries you need to have a degree as well. If you already have a degree, getting a TEFL/TESOL certificate is not too difficult. There are hundreds of TEFL/TESOL schools around where you can get this qualification within the next 30 days. Just make sure you get at least 120 classroom hours, and sufficient teaching practice (24 classroom hours or so) to give you a decent idea of what you will face when you stand in front of your first class! If you simply want to teach and travel, this should be enough. If you want to make a career out of TEFL, there are qualifications like CELTA and DELTA that will definitely enhance your career prospects in the long run. There is an excellent TEFL job search engine at the link below. Simply type in the city where you would like to teach (nothing else) and start dreaming..... http://tefljobs.macrofind.com |
