V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa
By John R. of MacroFindDotCom
The V&A Waterfront is South Africa's best known tourist attraction. The whole development was built around a real, living harbour. You can sit at one of the open air restaurants and watch a yacht from Panama float by, or a rusty old fishing trawler returning from the open sea... A number of old warehouses were converted to craft markets where you can buy unique hand crafts and paintings created by the very talented local artists. There are enough restaurants in the Waterfront to satisfy even the most demanding culinary tastes. From sea food to steak houses, from Sushi Bars to Indian restaurants, you are bound to find something that you like. And of course there are many restaurants offering views of Table Mountain, another world famous South African landmark. The 2 Oceans Aquarium is located inside the Waterfront complex. It offers no less than seven exhibition galleries with huge viewing windows where you can watch exotic marine life (like sharks) from a very close distance. You can also take a boat trip to Robben Island, where the world renowned Nelson Mandela was kept in custody by the Apartheid regime of South Africa for 27 years. He later became the first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa. As far as hotels go, you once again have a wide choice. There are hotels in all prices ranges, from some of the most luxurious hotels in the world, to simpler, and probably more interesting, accommodation like the Breakwater Lodge, a former 19th century prison. |
