South Africa for travellers - a real bargain By John Rabe of MacroFindDotCom The South African Rand has dropped more than 25% in the past couple of months, making this country a huge travel bargain once again. After a recent trip to South America, we can honestly say that South Africa even offers better value for money than most South American countries. The cost of a Big Mac meal is often used as a measure to compare the relative cost of travelling in different countries. At only $2.50 for a Big Mac meal (A Big Mac with a cola and chips), this is only about 50% of what we paid for the same meal in Buenos Aires, Argentina. On top of all that, South Africa has a first world infrastructure, with world class hotels, guest houses and hostels. The country also boasts stunning natural beauty, and of course the opportunity to see the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) in their natural habitat.
