Kirstenbosch botanical gardens, Cape Town, South Africa

The beautiful Kirstenbosch gardens cover an area of 528 hectares with 36 hectares of cultivated garden. It is situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, another Cape Town landmark. Kirstenbosch grows only indigenous South African plants, particularly those from the winter rainfall region of the country. Kirstenbosch was founded in 1913 to preserve South Africa's unique flora, and it was the first botanical garden in the world with this ethos. On Sundays during the summer months from December to March, musical sunset concerts are held on the beautiful lawns of Kirstenbosch. You can bring your picnic basket, and against the backdrop of the magnificent Cape Peninsula mountains, sip a glass of wine while listening to the orchestra performing works of Mozart, or often more contemporary music. From the gardens several trails lead off along and up the mountain slopes and these are regularly used by walkers and mountaineers. One of these trails, up a ravine called Skeleton Gorge, is an easy and popular route to the top of Table Mountain. The sweeping views from the upper slopes are simply stunning. Whether for a casual hike, a more stenuous walk or a lazy picnic, the gardens are a must-see when visiting Cape Town. Kirstenbosch is only 13 km from Cape Town city centre, and there is a regular bus service. While in the area you might also want to bring a visit to one of the well-know wine farms in the region, like Great Constantia.
