Hyde Park in London
By John R. of MacroFindDotCom
Hyde Park in London is one of my favourite places when I visit the city. To sit at the open air restaurant (next to the Serpentine lake) on a sunny day, just enjoying nature, makes you feel that you are far away from the hustle and bustle of London. Together with Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park forms a green haven of 625 acres. (It's still a bit smaller than New York's Central Park, but larger than Monaco!) There is something for everyone in Hyde Park. With over 4,000 trees, a lake, a meadow, horse rides and more it is easy to forget you're in the middle of London. Although, during daylight, the two parks merge seamlessly into each other, Kensington Gardens closes at dusk but Hyde Park remains open throughout the year from 5 am until midnight. One of the most famous landmarks in Hyde Park is of course Speaker's Corner, in the north-east corner of the park. Here you will nearly always find someone busy with a speech about a subject close to his heart, and nearly always will he/she have an audience. Contrary to popular belief, there is no immunity from the law, nor are any subjects proscribed. The police, however, mostly turns a blind eye unless the speaker incites violence, or swears (too much)! At the south end of the park is Rotten Row (derived from the French 'route du roi' or King's road) - a pathway of more than 6km long. In the 17th century the road was used by William III, who found the walk from Kensington Palace to St. James too dangerous to his liking. Today it's used by thousands of Londonners as a horse riding, cycling, rollerblading and jogging route. Hyde Park has been open to the public since 1637.
